The Department of Physics offers competitive research assistantships ($17,210 for 9 months + non-resident tuition waiver) and teaching assistantships ($9,903 for 9 months + full tuition waiver) plus summer support opportunities. Supplemental scholarships of up to $3,000 per annum are also available to strong candidates.

The Physics graduate program offers broad research opportunities in gravitational physics and cosmology, experimental and theoretical surface science and condensed matter physics, femtosecond laser spectroscopy, nuclear physics, and non-linear dynamics. Special opportunities exist in the LIGO gravity-wave detector project, and in experimental programs in superconductivity and magnetism, and in experimental and theoretical programs in electron microscopy and holography, synchrotron-based infrared spectroscopy, x-ray and electron diffraction and spectroscopy, and nanostructure growth.

You may request further information about the Physics graduate program and an application form by e-mailing physgradadmissions@uwm.edu.  Or you can use the on-line form and follow the procedures below to apply.

Deadlines:

  • The admission committee rarely accepts new students for the spring semester. Applicants are encouraged to apply for fall admission.
  • Applicants for fall admission should see that all their material have been received before 15 February.
  • The committee will begin meeting in mid-Febuary and continue until all our slots are filled (usually mid-March).

        UW Milwaukee
        P.O. Box 430
        Milwaukee, WI 53201
The admissions committee in Physics meets on a regular basis to review applications. To facilitate a preliminary (accelerated) evaluation of materials, please provide the following documents directly to the Physics Department.
  1. Copy of Reason for Graduate Study
  2. Copies of Official Transcripts
  3. GRE results (http://www.gre.org/) General scores are required. Physics "subject" score is strongly encouraged (and required to be considered for supplemental scholarships).
  4. Arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent directly to the department (PDF or hardcopy).
  5. Send 1-4 to:
        Admissions Office
        Physics Department
        UW-Milwaukee
        P.O. Box 413
        Milwaukee, WI 53201
  6. Or email to: physgradadmissions@uwm.edu.

International Students

  2. Provide official secondary and post-secondary educational credentials with an official English translation.
  3. Provide proof of English proficiency (http://www.toefl.org/)
  4. Provide Confidential Financial Statement [ PDF Form ]. (Most students are supported by a Teaching Assistanship (TA) or Research Assistantship RA. Therefore, you may just sign this form and return it to expedite processing of your package. If we cannot offer you a TA or RA we will inform you as soon as possible, at which time you can resubmit the form with the other documentation they require.)
  5. Pay the $75 Application Fee
  6. Send 2-5 to:
