Abbas Ourmazd's research interests include the structure of individual biological molecules, mapping electric and magnetic fields in solids at the nanometer scale, and atomic level reactions in non-equilibrium solids. As a member of the faculty at Oxford and a research leader at Bell Labs and IHP, Germany, he was the first to map the electric fields in the bulk of electronic devices , obtain atomic structure images of electronic materials, measure the composition of solids with near-atomic sensitivity and resolution, and quantitatively map the structure and composition of complex multilayer systems at the nanoscale. In his applied work, he has led the development of new generations of devices and systems for broadband communication, including CMOS and SiGe BiCMOS technologies, and local area hotspot networks . His work has led to 10 patents , two startup companies , over 1100 citations in the literature, and multiple licensing and cross-licensing agreements with leading companies including ASM , Intel , MIPS , and Motorola .

For over 20 years, Ourmazd has combined research and teaching with senior leadership positions in academia, national laboratories, corporate research, and entrepreneurial organizations, and has extensively advised governments and their agencies on both sides of the Atlantic. His awards include an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, the Johnson-Matthey Prize, and numerous prizes for innovation. Ourmazd is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
