Ice Sheet Ablation (pdf)

Students will investigate what properties cause ice sheets to recede. Students will use the experimental method to design and complete their own investigation. Students will also read and discuss current articles on this topic.

Students design their own plan for rock sample preparation for infrared analysis. Students assess all the plans and identify problems. Students prepare their own samples in small groups. One sample will be analyzed at UWM or the SRC. Students use their own results to calculate the thickness of an ice sheet. Since teachers may not have access to UWM or SRC two sample spectra are provided.
